What I specialise in

Trauma

I work with survivors of sexual abuse and trauma, and support men's mental health in a safe, confidential space.

Couples therapy

I am trained to support couples with their concerns with empathy, understanding and non-judgment.

Depression

I help young people and adults face life's difficulties and live more authentically, in the here and now.

About me

Hello, my name is David. I am a qualified Humanistic counsellor, trained in Existential Therapy, Person-centred Therapy and Gestalt Therapy. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Alongside private practice, I have worked as a Director and therapist for Male Survivors Berkshire, providing support for survivors of sexual abuse and trauma. I also have had a long association with No5 Young People, which offers counselling and support for young people in the Reading area, as a therapist and most recently in the Clinical Lead role, and now, as a supervisor.

My experience in the counselling and psychotherapy profession has given me the opportunity to meet with many adults and young people presenting with a wide range of issues, and to offer them support in making the changes that can help improve their lives.

I maintain regular and ongoing professional development and supervision in accordance with BACP regulations.

What I offer

I am committed to providing a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment where together we can talk things through.

Our work together can be on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period, whichever suits you best, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.

I am experienced in helping clients with a wide range of issues. I offer in-person counselling and psychotherapy in Lower Earley, alongside online therapy and telephone counselling with both individuals and couples. My practice room is a calm, warm and welcoming space with comfortable seating and soft lighting, and driveway parking. Remote counselling takes place in the same professional environment.

Approach and orientation

Offering a humanistic approach, my theoretical orientation is Existential, integrating Person-Centred and Gestalt ideas.

This means my work is rooted in the 'here-and-now' of how we live our life. Past experiences and relationships are explored in terms of the impact they have on the person we are today.

Working this way encourages an honest exploration of attitudes and assumptions alongside the free expression of feelings and opinions. For this to happen the relationship I develop with clients remains of the utmost importance throughout my work.

Philosophy on counselling and psychotherapy

One of the primary aims of existential therapy is to help people face the anxieties of life head on and to embrace the freedom of choice humans have, taking full responsibility for these choices as they do so. I believe in helping individuals to live more authentically and to be less concerned with superficiality. By encouraging clients to take ownership of their lives, to find meaning and to live fully in the present, I hope to facilitate change and growth.
